Although they enjoyed a promising career start when their song "Lucifer's Hammer" was featured in the second volume of the legendary Metal Massacre compilations, Los Angeles' Warlord saw their scant, poorly produced releases get lost in the shuffle of more talented bands exploding out of their hometown like so much devilish popcorn. Little is known about the band's origins, so short was the lifespan of their original incarnation, but suffice to say they were formed in the City of Angels in 1980, around the same time as more famous luminaries like Armored Saint, Slayer, and Metallica were first getting their acts together. Further confusing things, the members of Warlord adopted stage names like Destroyer, Archangel, and Thunderchild, which were often applied to more than one musician. But at least upon the release of their 1983 debut minialbum, one can confidently assert that Warlord consisted of vocalist Jack Rucker, guitarist/bassist Bill Tsamis, keyboardist Diane Arens, and founder and exRussian Roulette drummer Mark Zonder. Like contemporaries Queensr˙che, Fates Warning, and the aforementioned Armored Saint, Warlord were heavily influenced by the European metal aesthetic, and especially the thenprevalent New Wave of British Heavy Metal, for their epic approach to songwriting. This mission/vision carried through to their extensively titled followup, 1984's And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun, which, in reality, was supposed to be a "live" soundtrack accompanying a complete (if severely underfinanced) band concert. But other than introducing new vocalist Rick Cunningham and fulltime bass player Dave Watry, this undertaking did little to advance the group's cause although it did became quite the collector's item in decades to come. The persistent Warlord did manage to patch a full album's worth of studio material into 1986's Thy Kingdom Come LP, but decided to go their separate ways shortly thereafter, with the gifted Mark Zonder soon resurfacing in Fates Warning. The Best of Warlord collection was released in 1993, and almost a decade later, original members Zonder and Tsamis teamed up with Hammerfall vocalist Joacim Cans (by all accounts a very enthusiastic disciple) for a surprising comeback album entitled Rising Out of the Ashes.

Sarebbe stata una delle migliori band heavy, per tecnica, originalità ed altri, ma fra i litigi fra Zonder e Tsamis e mosse discografiche discutibili si sono persi ben presto.
L' ep Deliver Us è bellissimo ed originalissimo.
Infatti gli innesti medievaleggianti inseriti in quel disco sono tutt' ora qualcosa di unico nel panorama heavy.
Inoltre le ritmiche stesse sono particolari. Variegate prima di tutto, infatti si passa da momenti di estrema malinconia come in Winter Tears, a passaggi lugubri come la spettrale Black Mass, alla trionfale Lucifer's Hammer.
Tsamis condisce il tutto con una tecnica davvero notevole ed un gusto ritmico e solistico davvero superlativo, i suoi assoli sono tra i pochi nell' heavy metal (in generale) che ascolto davvero con piacere, colmi di passaggi azzeccati e senza passaggi ad ipervelocità fuori luogo inseriti solo per sbandierare una gran tecnica.
Anche la voce di Rucker è ottima, forse un pò troppo pacata, di quella pacatezza tipica di certe voci adolescenziali, ma ci sta comunque e quando serve sa anche farsi aggressivo.
Nulla da dire su Zonder, ed interessante l' inserimento costante di una tastiera.
Poi il full di debutto, un disco che proprio non riesco a capire.
Già la riproposizione quasi completa dell' ep sa tanto di mossa furbetta, ma comunque comprensibile.
Il problema è che la registrazione e soprattutto la produzione fanno ampiamente schifo. I pezzi dell' ep con questo suono sono insignificanti, mentre quelli nuovi sono davvero a loro agio con queste sonorità.
Inoltre, sempre gli stessi mostrano già un parziale rinnovamento e ciò che conta è che sono davvero belli. Forse non quanto quelli dell' ep, ma non sfigurano di certo.
Damien King II canta bene su questi, ma colleziona una pessima figura sugli altri.

Dico solo che Child of the damned è una delle mie canzoni preferite in assoluto!!!
Devo ringraziare gli Hammerfall, perchè è grazie a loro che li ho conosciuti, grazie alla cover proprio di Child of the damned contenuta in Glory To The Brave.. -
